WALKERTON-Ruth H. Zahrn, 102, of LaPorte, formerly of Walkerton, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017 at her home in LaPorte, IN.
Ruth was born April 4, 1915 in Albion, NY to Edgar and Pearl (Batt) Hazelbaker and lived in the Walkerton area since 1960, coming from Ft. Bragg, NC.
On June 2, 1950 at Ft. Bragg, NC, she was married to Gilbert Zahrn, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister; and one grandson.
Survivors include one son, Robert (Denise) Zahrn of Summerville, SC; four daughters, Marina Studt of Plymouth, Linda Zahrn of Rockford, MI, Norma (Don) Ross of Highlands, NJ and Arlene Workman of Pueblo, CO; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Ruth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Walkerton. She was a registered nurse and a veteran of the Army Nurse Corps, serving in WW2, and was decorated with the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the WW2 Victory Ribbon. She was a lifetime member of the North Liberty VFW #1954 and the North Liberty American Legion Post #356 . She was also an avid reader and philanthropist. Ruth was lucky to have survived diphtheria in 1923.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) at the First Presbyterian Church of Walkerton with Rev. David Detamore officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton, where military honors will be conducted. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church.
